Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?
If you are thinking about getting breast implants, you might wonder if breast augmentation is right for you. In a personal consultation with a BECA surgeon, they can help you to assess your candidacy for surgery. To help determine this, the surgeon will ask about your medical background and the lifestyle you lead, among other things. Before planning your consultation, you can ask yourself the following simple questions to help determine your basic candidacy:
- Am I in good health overall?
- What expectations do I have for the surgery? Are they reasonable?
- Am I aware of the risks and complications of breast augmentation surgery?
Did you answer “yes” to the above questions? If so, you are ready to schedule your one-on-one personal consultation with a BECA surgeon. Call or email us today; we also offer Skype consultations for our out-of-town patients.
Choosing Your Breast Implants
Our breast augmentation patients have the choice of either saline, silicone or form-stable silicone breast implants. Not sure which to choose? Here is some basic information on each implant type. Your BECA surgeon will also help you to determine which is right for you during your initial consultation.
Saline implants have an outer silicone shell that is filled with a sterile salt water solution on the inside. These implants are placed in the body empty and then filled. The advantages that saline implants have include affordability (when compared to other implant types) and, in theory, a more customizable size (as they are not pre-filled and therefore can be adjusted to the desired volume).
A silicone implant has a silicone outer shell that is filled with a thick cohesive silicone gel. Silicone implants are a popular choice for breast augmentation, as these implants look and feel the most like natural breasts. Because of their cohesive gel filling, they are less likely to cause visible rippling or wrinking. They are also thought to last longer than silicone implants, and are less prone to leakage. These new silicone implants are much different than the older silicone gel implants of the 1970’s and 80’s, as they are filled with a cohesive gel rather than the liquid silicone used in the older style implants. These new silicone implants are sometimes referred to as “gummy bear” implants since the silicone is cohesive and will stick to itself (and not leak out into the tissues) if it were to break.
Form-Stable Silicone Implants
At BECA, we also offer our patients the option of form-stable silicone implants, also called the true “gummy bear” implants. These implants consist of an outer silicone shell which has been filled with a form-stable gel that holds its shape better than other implant types. Also known as teardrop-shaped implants, the advantages of form-stable silicone implants include the fact that they won’t ripple or fold in the implant pocket and they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, fit for every body type.
No one implant is right for everyone. Our surgeons will recommend an implant for you that meets your goals and fits your body type best.
Choosing Your Implant Incision Location
We use three incision points when performing breast augmentation at our BECA centers. Each incision location has its advantages, which are based on the patient’s body shape and aesthetic desires. These three incision types will be discussed during your initial consultation, but we have included some basic information on each incision type below.
This incision is made around the areola’s edge, in the dark area that surrounds the nipple. Though the scar that this incision creates is well-hidden by the color of the areola, there is a possible risk of it causing difficulty with breastfeeding.
The inframammary incision is made underneath the breast, in the breast fold. Because of its location, this incision is easily concealed by the breast for women with fold under their breast. Women who are concerned about their increased risk of breastfeeding complications with the periareolar incision might consider this incision option instead.
This incision type is a specialty of BECA surgeons and is used as a less invasive technique that leaves no scarring on the breast. Because the transaxillary incision is made in the armpit area, its small size and location makes the scar unnoticeable. When performing breast augmentation using this incision, a small camera is inserted to provide visual guidance as the surgeon performs the procedure on high-definition video monitors. Now with the use of Keller Funnels ™, even large silicone implants may be placed through the underarm, leaving no scar on the breast.
Choosing the Placement of the Implant
A breast implant can be placed either underneath the chest muscle (submuscular placement), over the chest muscle (subglandular placement) or partially under the chest muscle (dual plane position placement). The choice of where to place the implant can involve a variety of factors, including the patient’s body shape, the size of their frame and whether they lead a more active or sedentary lifestyle. These and other factors will be discussed with your BECA surgeon during the initial consultation; at that time, they can help you to determine the right placement for you.
The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery at BECA is an outpatient procedure performed by one of our experienced breast experts at a local, fully accredited hospital or surgery center. The surgery often takes one to two hours to perform, during which time the patient is placed under general anesthesia. The procedure involves incision made in one of three locations (in the areola, breast fold or armpit area), where the implants are then placed. (If the patient has chosen saline implants, they are placed in the breast empty and filled afterwards inside the breast. The silicone implants are pre-filled but can still be placed through a small incision using the Keller Funnel ™.) Once the surgeon has placed the implants, the incisions are closed with sutures. Surgical gauze and a surgical bra are then placed on the breasts to hold them in position as they heal and to protect the incisions. Patients will need to be driven home after surgery and have someone stay with them for the first 24 hours.
Recovering from Breast Augmentation Surgery
Rest is very important after breast augmentation surgery, particularly for the first few days. However, it is equally important to get up from bed and move around starting the first day after surgery, as this movement will increase blood circulation and help with swelling. Your doctor will also provide you with a list of post-operative exercises and massages to be performed during this time. Movements should be gentle, and should not involve lifting, pushing or pulling for at least two weeks after surgery. It is important to lift your arms above your head to work on your range of motion and keep the muscles from becoming stiff. To ensure that you are healing properly, your breast surgeon will schedule follow-up appointments for the first few days and weeks after your surgery. Breast augmentation patients can typically return to office work a week after surgery, though more time will be needed if the job is physically demanding. Exercise (except for chest exercises) can be resumed after two weeks. Weight lifting and chest exercises should be avoided for at least six weeks.
