Breast Reduction Procedure Overview
The breast reduction procedure is an outpatient procedure performed at a local, fully accredited surgical facility. This surgery takes between two and three hours to perform, after which the patient will typically be allowed to go home. Our surgeons will want to see you back the next day after surgery to ensure everything is healing appropriately.
Different incisions may be used to remove breast tissue and fat, and will depend on factors such as the patient’s breast size, the amount of tissue and fat being removed and the amount of sagging present. For moderately large breasts that have a moderate amount of sagging, the board-certified surgeon may use a keyhole incision (around the areola and down the center of the breast to the breast fold). For very large breasts that have a significant amount of sagging, an anchor incision (a keyhole incision with an additional incision made horizontally across the breast crease) might be used. Whichever incision the surgeon deems appropriate to use, excess breast tissue, fat and skin are then removed from this site and the remaining breast tissue is reshaped. The final incision type will be chosen to give you the best result based on your anatomy and breast shape and size.
During surgery, the nipple and areola usually remain attached to the breast so the nerves and milk ducts remain intact, though in some cases (often with very large, pendulous breasts) they are removed and reattached at a higher position on the breast mound. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures and a surgical bra is placed over the breasts to provide support and protect the incisions as they heal.
Breast Reduction Recovery
It is common to have a certain amount of swelling and bruising after surgery. To help with swelling, sleep with your upper body slightly elevated using pillows. Any discomfort can be managed with prescription pain medication, provided by your doctor. It is important to avoid lifting anything over five pounds for the first week. Light exercise can be resumed after a week, and more strenuous exercise after four weeks. You will be able to return to office work or other sedentary work about a week or two after surgery.
