Types of Liposuction Offered at BECA

Liposuction works by destroying fat cells in the treatment area and then suctioning them from the body. At our BECA Centers, we offer three different liposuction techniques to our male and female patients.

Tumescent liposuction

This technique involves a large amount of local anesthetic injected into the area being treated. The injected fluid has a swelling effect on the fat, which allows the surgeon to remove it easier and with less bleeding.

Ultrasonic liposuction (or Vaser liposuction)

This form of liposuction uses ultrasound waves to liquefy fat deposits, so that they can then be easily removed.

Mechanically assisted liposuction

This type of liposuction uses the tumescent liposuction technique but combines it with the use of a mechanically-powered cannula (the tool used to suction fat) for more effective and precise fat removal.

Laser liposuction (or Smart Lipo)

With laser liposuction, a laser beam is used to liquefy fat cells before they are suctioned out of the body.

Is Liposuction for You?

Are you thinking about having liposuction to get rid of those love handles or that pooch? The best way to know if you’re really a good candidate to have liposuction is to come into BECA Miami, or any BECA Center, for a free consultation. When you sit down with one of our knowledgeable surgeons, s/he will be able to assess your medical history and examine you in order to make sure that the procedure will fit your needs and desires.

The following are some general guidelines to start with to see if you’re a good candidate:

  • You are in good health, with no medical conditions
  • You are within 20 percent of a healthy weight for your build
  • Your weight is stable
  • Your skin is firm and elastic
  • You have pockets of excess fat on your stomach, thighs, hips

Who Liposuction is NOT for:

  • People who are significantly overweight
  • People who wish to use liposuction as a weight loss surgery
  • People with excess, loose skin
  • People with medical conditions, especially those that involve bleeding problems
  • People who are using medications that increase the risk of bleeding (such as anticoagulants)
  • Pregnant or lactating women

Liposuction vs. Weight Loss Surgery

Liposuction is not a weight loss surgery; it is a tool used for those who want to rid themselves of the pesky fat deposits on their body that they can’t get rid of by following a regular, healthy diet and exercise habits. If you’re 30 pounds or more overweight, it is recommended that you follow a eating and exercise plan to reach a healthy weight and then remain stable at that weight for several months before considering liposuction.

What to Know About Your Liposuction Procedure

Depending on the type of liposuction technique being used, you will either be awake during the procedure or be given a general anesthesia to put you to sleep for the entire process. Whether or not general anesthesia is used, a local anesthesia will be used to numb the area or areas being treated. During a tumescent liposuction procedure, a large amount of anesthesia fluid will be injected into these areas.

The surgeon will then create tiny incisions around the area being treated, such as the stomach or upper thighs. From these incisions, the surgeon will insert the cannula (a thin, hollow vacuum tube), moving it back and forth to suction out the fat. The incisions are then closed with sutures.

What’s Recovery Like?

After surgery, your surgeon will place you in a compression garment for a few days, after which you will need to wear a support garment for several weeks. The support garment is made in such a way that you can go to the bathroom without taking it off. If you wish to shower during this time, keep the garment on and pat or blow dry it afterwards. Once you are further along in the healing process, usually after several days, you will be able to take the garment on and off with ease.

We recommend that you start walking around the day after surgery, as this will promote circulation and help with swelling. If you experience any discomfort for the first week after surgery, you can use the medication that is prescribed by your doctor. You will be able to drive about a week after surgery, providing that you have stopped taking any pain medication at that time. Most of our patients can return to their desk jobs after one week, and light exercise after two weeks.

You will see some results of liposuction immediately following surgery, though it is more of a gradual process, as you will see your body continue to get trimmer and tighter, and you’ll start to notice you are looking better and better in your clothes. At the six-month mark, you will be able to enjoy the final results, and the boost of self-confidence that goes with them!

Will Your Liposuction Results Last?

You may wonder: will that smoking new bod of yours last? The answer is that the permanence of liposuction results depends on you. Since liposuction is not a weight loss surgery, those who have it done need to maintain their results with healthy lifestyle habits. Any weight that is gained after liposuction will be distributed more evenly throughout the body, but will not return to the “problem area” treated by liposuction (since the fat cells in that area were destroyed and removed).

Ready to Say Goodbye to Your Trouble Areas?

We know that you have that special outfit hanging in your closet — the one you can’t quite fit into or would look much better with that extra pinch of fat smoothed out. A BECA plastic surgeon will be happy to meet you and explain more about how liposuction can give you the leaner look you’re going for.
