According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, Breast Augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the world. As beauty trends continue to evolve over time, preferences with breast enhancement also shift. BECA founder and board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Scott Ennis discusses the growing trend of smaller cup size and how patients can achieve a natural look with breast implants.

“When we see our patients, they have either lost volume in their breasts following childbirth or weight loss or always had very small breasts and want to fill out their swimsuits and clothing. We are not seeing any decrease in the amount of women desiring breast enhancement as these factors haven’t changed over the years. What we have seen from our numerous patients is a shift from the large, voluptuous shapes to a more natural cup size that restores the volume and youthfulness to their shape.”

Natural Cup Size and Look

The shift to a more natural cup size for the body frame is something Dr. Ennis has seen with his European patients for many years and is now shifting to his patients here in the U.S. “Patients travel from all over the world to me for breast augmentation since we specialize in the placement of the implant under the arm so there is no scar on the breast. When my patients request the “European look” instead of the “bombshell look”, I select an implant that fits the women’s physique and personality. Most women are very conservative and want something they can dress up and show off when it is appropriate but at the same time can dress it down and go to work or take the kids to school. Notice the shift in the Victoria’s Secret models. They trend towards more proportional breast size instead of overly large cups now,” observes Dr. Ennis.

Dr. Ennis Discusses Implant Size and Position

Selecting the Implant Profile and Size

Dr. Ennis explains the careful selection of the correct implant profile and size is a large factor in the outcome of the breast augmentation procedure. “If the implant is too narrow, you end up with a wide gap between the breasts,” he states. “And the implant should not be wider than the armpit because the breast will not look attractive if it spills out the sides of the ribcage.”

Additionally, some patients whose preference is a much bigger cup size may worry larger implants may contribute to back or neck pain, or even cause sagging.

Implant Location for Natural Look

“Our surgeons place breast implants behind the muscle so the muscle supports the implant instead of just breast tissue. This gives a more natural shape and doesn’t put as much stress on a bra to hold them up. This is why many patients can even go braless with ease and comfort.”

“With the variety of implant shapes, sizes and profiles, we are able to customize the procedure to accommodate each individual patient, choosing the breast implant size and shape that meets their aesthetic goals,” says Dr. Ennis.
