How Does Liposuction Work?

The plastic surgeons of BECA Centers offer liposuction, or body contouring, to both men and women. Liposuction works by destroying fat cells and suctioning them from the body. There are several forms of the procedure, including laser-assisted liposuction and power-assisted liposuction. Schedule a complimentary consultation with the experts at BECA Centers to learn more!

Types of liposuction

  • Tumescent liposuction
  • Ultrasonic liposuction (also known as Vaser liposuction)
  • Mechanically assisted liposuction
  • Laser liposuction (also called Smart Lipo)

Why Have Liposuction?

Liposuction is a great way to remove excess localized fat. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and is not a diet program. What liposuction will do is change those pesky curves you don’t want, allowing you to show off the ones you do want!

What liposuction will do is enhance your body contours and reduce the amount of fat in the areas treated. Think about it this way: if you put on a Spandex outfit and see contours you don’t like, liposuction can help fix these unwanted areas.

Again, liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, and if you overeat and do not exercise and/or fail to follow a healthy diet, you will gain weight just like you did prior to having liposuction, as liposuction will not change your metabolism. We can fix those problem areas but you have to maintain them with a healthy lifestyle!

Before you have Liposuction Consider a Healthy Diet and Exercise

You should try to achieve your goal weight prior to undergoing any cosmetic procedure. Your goal weight will be different than other peoples so be reasonable and realize that our bodies do change as we age and through pregnancies. There are certain things we just can’t fix despite how much we exercise or diet. This is where procedures such as tummy tucks and liposuction come in to play. These will fix things that we can’t fix on our own. Keep in mind, though, that your results will be the best if you are at least close to your goal weight and you are comfortable with your weight but just want those problem areas fixed.

What Else Do I Need to Know?

It is important to note that men and women store fat in different areas. In women, this tends to be in the hips, the outer thighs, the back of the thighs and the inner thigh. Men, on the other hand, tend to store localized fat in the abdomen or “love handles.” While liposuction is an excellent method of removing that frustrating localized fat, it is not an effective way to treat obesity.

Following liposuction you will need to wear a support garment for several weeks. You can also expect some bruising, but should be up and about the next day and be able to return to normal everyday activities within a week or so. The good news is, when you do return you can look forward to that svelte, trim figure you’ve been dreaming of for so long!

Liposuction Recovery

After your liposuction procedure, you will be in a compression garment much like Spanks. Your first garment is typically made of a fine mesh-type fabric and for women is crotchless so you can go to the restroom without taking it off. You can shower the very next day but we encourage you to shower in your garment and pat it dry or blow dry it as you will be sore and it may be difficult to take it on and off the first couple of days. After several days you will be able to take it on and off comfortably.

You should be walking around the house the very next day and out and about within a few days. You can drive once you are off the pain medications which is usually 5-7 days after surgery. Most people are back doing office work in approximately seven days. Most people can resume light exercise in two weeks.
