Tighten vs Volume. About the Tummy Skin and Muscles

Think about the skin of our body as the container and the fat or breast tissue as the volume. If you really simplify things. There are only two things you can do in Plastic Surgery, adjust the container or adjust the volume. So things like face lifts, breast lifts, and tummy tucks tighten the skin or in essence the container. Liposuction only takes volume away and breast implants only add volume.

Women’s breast and abdomen skin is designed so that the breast skin can relax and grow during puberty and the breast and abdomen skin can relax to accommodate pregnancies.

When looking specifically at the abdomen, two things happen, the skin gets stretched but the more significant issue is the muscle get stretched and split apart in order for the baby to grow during the pregnancy. Once the babies are born, these muscles don’t often come back together. Unfortunately there are not enough sit ups in the world to make the muscles come back together once they have been split apart through pregnancies.

At BECA Centers, our world renowned tummy tuck surgeons can restore your flat tummy and get you where you belong — on the beach, turning heads!

Who Should Have a Tummy Tuck?

Do you want a flat, toned looking abdominal area? If you have excess abdominal fat and skin resulting from age or the effects of pregnancy or weight fluctuations, or prior abdominal surgeries, you may very well be a good candidate for tummy tuck. Deformity of the abdominal wall, muscles and connective tissue is another common reason to undergo this procedure.

After pregnancies, the skin of the abdomen gets over stretched and muscles can split apart but this can happen in almost any woman, even if they have not had children, they are designed that way. We very frequently see women who have never had kids and never been pregnant that come in with concerns of their “pooch”.

Even in these women who never got pregnant, the muscles will eventually split apart and often require a tummy tuck to get that nice flat stomach back. We very frequently perform tummy tucks or abdominoplasties on women who have never had children and never been pregnant as their muscles eventually split apart just as those women who had multiple pregnancies.

If the only issue you are experiencing is excessive fat, another amazing procedure — liposuction â€” may be the better option. Liposuction can very nicely correct those troublesome areas. Ask your surgeon which procedure is right for you.

If you would like to address other effects of pregnancy, mommy makeover surgery may be your best bet. Contact us to learn more about this combination procedure designed especially for mothers.

Can you redo an Abdominoplasty if you are not happy with your previous result?

A revision (or secondary) abdominoplasty is often used by the surgeons of BECA Centers to improve upon the surgical results of people who previously underwent an abdominoplasty at other facilities. So whether don’t like the appearance of your scar, you feel the scar is too high, or there is still residual loose skin, our team will walk you through all of your possible abdominoplasty options.

The Tummy Tuck Procedure

A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is performed by making an incision low on the abdominal wall much like a C-section scar and elevating the skin off of the muscles of the abdomen. The muscles are then sutured back together in the middle much like a corset would be cinched tight. The skin is then pulled down like a window shade and the excess trimmed. The belly button is still your same belly button, it just comes out through a new spot on the skin.

In the end, you are left with a nice flat stomach and most all of the skin between your belly button and hair line is all gone. In general, all of the pinch-able skin in the lower abdomen when you sit down is removed!

What About Recovery?

As you proceed through recovery, you will gradually be able to take part in more of your everyday activities. In the initial days and weeks after your surgery, you will be limited in the amount we will allow you to lift but we want you up and walking at least once an hour while you are awake.

After about three to five days you will probably be out and about, walking slowly and participating in most of your daily activities, including bathing, cooking small meals, and moving around the house.

After 7 to 10 days, you should be able to walk and perform your daily activities without many limitations. With A tummy tuck, you should anticipate two week off from office work and six weeks before any lifting over 10lbs and a full three months to be able to strain to lift something heavy.

We have an entire scar management program that we put all patients on. This is typically started around two to three weeks after surgery. This will be tailored and customized to your individual skin type and healing process.

After two to three weeks you will be performing the vast majority of your normal activities, but no strenuous exercise. After six weeks you may gradually resume exercise and after three months you should not have any residual limitations.

And soon, you will be looking sexy in your favorite dresses and bikinis. To learn about how BECA Centers can help you achieve this, call (561) 270-4867 or click here to book a consultation. The surgeons are available for in-office and online consultations.
